New Compositions for Wind Band

“In Texas, football is huge: a nice side effect of that is that the band programs in Texas are the best in the country, possibly the best in the world.”

“(band) can be a really thick, dense texture that orchestra just can’t replicate.”

Composer, Founder of, and Nuts and Bolts contributor Michael Mikulka discusses some of the factors that led to the development of the modern wind band, and shares 3 contrasting pieces that exemplify some of the styles contemporary band composers are writing in.

“One of the great things about this generation of composers is that we are exposed to so much music that wasn’t available even 20 years ago. We can go on YouTube or Spotify and we can listen to pretty much any variety of music and we can do it on demand, and we just have so much, and I feel like that comes through in a lot of the music written today: we write in styles that are a lot more difficult to categorize, and I think that’s a good thing.”

The compositions featured may be heard in their entirety here:
Detour” by Chris Ozley
Through the Icy Dawn” by Michael Mikulka
“N.44” (Brass Ensemble version) by PoChun Wang

Original air date:  September 23, 2013
