Catch a rare glimpse at the elusive gnarwhallaby! gnarwhallaby (Matt Barbier, trombones; Richard Valitutto, keyboards; Derek Stein, violoncello; Brian Walsh, clarinets) is a Los Angeles-based quartet which formed in 2011 to revive and perform repertoire composed for their unique instrumentation. I met the group at the Creating New Music Workshop led by David Lang and ICE at the Weill Music Institute, where they had been invited to perform their captivating, newly commissioned work “Lullaby 4,” by composer Nicholas Deyoe, at Carnegie Hall’s Zankel Hall on November 20th “New Voices, New Music” concert. These standout guys (especially when Nicholas is around!) are truly unique, smart, talented, fun, hilarious, sweet, serious, and silly all at the same time. I basically want to date them as an ensemble & Nicholas. Five years from now when they’re the best in the game you can say you heard them on Nuts and Bolts Music first.

Original air date: Monday November 25th, 2013 on Nuts and Bolts Music on KVRX in Austin.

Music featured:
“pour quatre” (beginning) – Włodzimierz Kotoński – live performance on Dog Star Orchestra concert series, August 11 – on their upcoming album due for release in January/February 2014
“Lullaby 4” (three excerpts) – Nicholas Deyoe – Recorded at Carroll Studios 11/17/2013
